Men’s Swimming & Diving Win Two During Quad Meet

Nov. 17 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s swimming & diving team just missed sweeping their home quad meet against Franklin & Marshall (207-55), University of Rochester (214.5-47.5) and Washington & Lee (122-140) at home Saturday afternoon. The team won five events and placed second in eight with the difference against W&L possibly coming in the sprint freestyles.

W&L was able to sweep the 50-yard freestyle and take both first and second in the 100-yard freestyle while senior Pat Snyder (Marlton, N.J./St. Joseph’s Prep) finished fourth in the 50 and third in the 100 free for the Tartans. W&L also won the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay, two events the Tartans took second in but a third place finish by the Tartans “B” team in the medley relay helped Carnegie Mellon score points.

Sophomore John Johnson (Allentown, Pa.) swam the backstroke well winning the 100-yard event in 54.35 and finishing .75 seconds behind freshman teammate Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) in the 200-yard event. Hanson also took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.29 and the 200-yard IM in 2:00.81.

Sophomore Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won the 100-yard breaststroke (59.97) and sophomore Andrew Seo (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) finished less than a second before Huber in the 200-yard breaststroke to take first.

Junior Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./ Friends School of Baltimore) continued his dominance in the 1000-yard freestyle reeling in another victory with a time of 9:53.30 and also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.25.

An additional second place finish for the Tartans came from freshman Justin Whaley (Helena, Mont.) in the 200-yard butterfly. His time of 1:59.52 was .34 seconds off the pace of W&L’s Josh Gonzalez.

During the diving meet with Rochester on Friday, November 16, sophomore Matt Kuhn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) won both the 1 meter and 3 meter boards with sophomore teammate Joe Kopko (Washington, Pa./Trinity) less than five points behind him on the 1 meter board.

The Tartans take a weekend off before they travel to Gambier, Ohio for the Nike Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Thursday, November 29 – Saturday, December 1. The diving team will travel to Miami University of Ohio for a meet the same weekend.
