Tartans Go 3-1 at Pitt Invite

Feb. 2 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The #15 Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team traveled up Fifth Avenue to the University of Pittsburgh to compete in an invitational with teams from Duquesne University, Clarion University and Denison University and finished 3-1 with wins over Duquesne (148-118), Clarion (158-113) and Denison University (141-139), the number one ranked Division III team.
Sophomore diver Matt Kuhn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) started the meet with a fourth place finish in the 1-meter board with 225.85 points and a sixth place showing in the 3-meter board with 230.75 points.
Junior Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 9:39.24 dropping 14 seconds off his time, while freshman Frank Olechnowicz (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Jefferson Science Tech) finished third in a season-best 9:27.70. McConnell also finished in the top of the 500-yard freestyle with a third place time of 4:43.79.
A pair of young Tartans finished third during the meet as freshman Michael Panzitta (Dallas, Pa./Bishop Itoban) touched third in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best 53.35 and sophomore Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) finished the 100-yard breaststroke third in 59.89. Panzitta also recorded a season-best in the 200-yard backstroke with a fourth place finish in 1:57.29 with freshman Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) finishing fifth in 1:58.14.
Freshman Justin Whaley (Helena, Mont.) finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.98 while senior Dave Mohney (Sedona, Ariz./Sedona Red Rock) touched fifth in 1:59.36. Whaley's time was a career-best while Mohney collected a season-best finish.
Senior Michael Bailey (New Kent, Va.) finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.78 and senior Patrick Snyder (Marlton, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep) recorded a time of 21.77 to finish fifth in the 50-yard freestyle.
The men's team will host a time trial event on Saturday, February 9 before heading to the University Athletic Association Championships on February 20.
