10 Wins Pace Carnegie Mellon Swimming & Diving

Nov. 10 – (GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming & diving team defeated Grove City College 171-128 for their second dual meet win of the season. The Tartans won 10 events and swept the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Junior Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) won two events on the day taking the 200 and 500-yard freestyles in times of 1:48.02 and 4:55.13. Teammates Jonas Altman-Kurosaki (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant), Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) and James Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) swept the other distance freestyle as Altman-Kurosaki touched in 10:02.72.

Also taking first place for the Tartans was junior Ron Papa (Malabon City, Philippines/Cranbrook Kingswood), sophomore Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Justin Whaley (Helena, Mont.). Papa won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.68, Huber the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.03) and Whaley the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.59). 

Sophomore Andrew Seo (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) recorded a season-best in the 200-yard breaststroke with his first place time of 2:13.61.

Hanson followed his second place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a first place showing in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.89.

The Tartans also won both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay to round out their 10 top finishes.

The team will return to the pool on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 as they host a quad meet with Franklin & Marshall, Washington & Lee and the University of Rochester. Diving will start the meet on Friday with swimming events to take place at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
