Men's Swimming Defeats Clarion in Season Opener

Oct. 27 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University hosted their first swimming and diving meet of the year defeating Clarion University, 155-135 in men's action. Junior Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) and freshman Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) posted two victories for the Tartans.

McConnell won both the distance freestyle events with a 9:59.16 time in the 1,000-yard free and a 4:52.14 time in the 500-yard event. Hanson won the 200-yard backstroke by touching the wall in 1:57.17 and followed with a 200-yard IM victory in 2:00.82.

Sophomore Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) had a first and second place finish on the day, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.84. He finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.19.

Also finishing with first place titles in the butterfly events were freshmen Justin Whaley (Helena, Mont.) and Travis Piper (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin). Whaley led a sweep of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.98 finishing ahead of sophomore teammates Andrew Weitz (Flourtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Scott Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional). Piper won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.55.

In the diving events, sophomore Joe Kopko (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished second on the 1-meter board.

The Tartans are in action again on November 10 at Grove City College.
