Men's Swimming Moves to 5-1

Jan. 12 – (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – Carnegie Mellon University's swim team returned to the pool Saturday afternoon at Case Western Reserve University following a week long training trip to Florida. The men's team won eight events finishing off the Spartans 137-68 to win their fifth dual meet of the year.

Junior Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) won two events for the afternoon touching first in both the 500-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle. McConnell finished one second ahead of teammate Alex Hanson in the 500-yard event with a time of 4:48.58. His time of 9:57.39 led a sweep of the 1,000-yard event.

Senior sprinter Michael Bailey (New Kent, Va.) led a sweep of the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.12 while freshman Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) led a sweep of the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:14.76.

After finishing .15 seconds away from a first place showing in the 50-yard freestyle, senior Patrick Snyder (Marlton, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep) finished the 100-yard freestyle in first with a time of 48.77.  Sophomore John Johnson (Allentown, Pa.) touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 54.78 just .2 seconds ahead of teammate Ron Papa (Malabon City, Philippines/Cranbrook Kingswood).

Sophomore Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the Tartans fourth sweep of the day, this one in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:00.25.

The Tartans last win of the day came in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.47 by freshman Josh Mathews (Upper Falls, Md./Perry Hall), Papa, sophomore Jeff Dahlen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Bailey. 

The Tartans will host their final dual meet of the year on Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m. when Allegheny College comes to the Carnegie Mellon campus.
