Tartan Men Defeat Gators in Last Home Meet

Jan. 19 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The seniors of Carnegie Mellon University's men's swimming and diving team were sent off in style Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Allegheny College Gators 191-91. In total the team won 11 events and swept six. They are now 6-1 in dual meets this year.
The 200-yard medley relay started the day with a 1:37.78 time thanks to junior Ryan Piper (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin), sophomore Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.), freshman Travis Piper (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and senior Michael Bailey (New Kent, Va.). Freshman Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) then won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 10:00.92.
Junior Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) picked up a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.36 and freshman Michael Panzitta (Dallas, Pa./Bishop Itoban) led a sweep of the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.31. Sophomore Andrew Weitz (Flourtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) finished second with a time of 57.18 and junior Jon Spring (McLean, Va.) finished third with a time of 58.51.
Sophomore Andrew Seo (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:01.93 and freshman Justin Whaley (Helena, Mont.) led a sweep of the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:59.26. Sophomore Jonas Altman-Kurosaki (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) and senior Dave Mohney (Sedona, Ariz./Sedona Red Rock) came in second and third respectively with times of 2:04.91 and 2:05.24.
Travis Piper won an exciting 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.82 while Bailey won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.07 and sophomore Jeff Dahlen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.75.
Winning the last two events for the Tartans were sophomore Gates Winkler (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.72) and junior Stephen Vu (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) in the 100-yard butterfly (55.65).
The Tartans continue their dual meet season with a road trip to Westminster College on Saturday, January 26 at 1:00 p.m.
