Swimming and Diving Finish Strong at UAA Championships;
Krzeminski, Kuhn and Diving Coach Receive UAA Honors

Day 3 Results | Final Team Scores

Feb. 10 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men’s and women’s swimming teams competed at the final day of University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Saturday, February 10, held at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The men tallied 1208.50 points placing them third and the women placed fourth after recording 1044.50 points.

The Tartans crowned three individual UAA Champions in the final day of competition. Senior David Krzeminski (Grandville, Mich.) turned in his second first place showing of the championships as he won the individual UAA title in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:49.76. His time set a UAA record, breaking former teammate Chris Pearson’s time of 1:50.90 back in 2004. Krzeminski’s time was also an NCAA provisional ‘A’ cut.

The Tartan’s second champion was in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke. Junior Alex Kinzler (Apollo, Pa./Plum) was crowned, as she turned in an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 2:24.15 setting the pool record.

Freshman diver Matt Kuhn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took home his second UAA championship after tallying a score of 388.20 in the 3-meter board event. Kuhn placed first in the 1-meter on Thursday. Teammate, freshman Joe Kopko (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished third in the event. Sophomore diver Charlotte Jennings (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) placed fourth in the women’s 3-meter after placing second in the 1-meter Friday.

Both teams came away with a third place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay with the men provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a 'B' cut. The men's team comprised of Krzeminski, juniors Michael Bailey (Quinton, Va./New Kent) and Patrick Snyder (Marlton, N.J./St. Joseph’s Prep) and sophomore Ron Papa (Malabon City, Philippines/Cranbrook Kingswood) finished in 3:06.42. The women finished in 3:37.69 and was comprised of senior Jenny Sieger (Newton Square, Pa./Radnor), junior Lauren Connell (Hasbrouck Hts., N.J./Hasbrouck Hts.), sophomore Allison Retotar (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills) and freshman Sara Andrews (Washington, Pa./Trinity).

The Tartans had three other swimmers with personal best times on Saturday. Connell placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.18), freshman John Johnson (Allentown, Pa.) finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.89 and freshman Scott Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) finished two spots behind Johnson in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.96).

Carnegie Mellon was honored with three awards. Krzeminski was named Men's Swimmer of the Year; Kuhn was named Men's Diver of the Year and dive coach Alicia Gorman was honored with Men's Dive Coach of the Year recognition.
