Tartans Swimming Place Fourth at UAA Championships

Feb. 11 - (ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s and women’s swimming teams competed at the final day of University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Saturday, February 12, held at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Both teams finished in fourth place with the men tallying 453.50 points and the women 412.
Junior David Krzeminski (Grandville, Mich.) turned in the only first place showing for the Tartans in the final day. Krzeminski won the individual UAA title in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:53.18. His time was an NCAA provisional ‘B’ cut.
Senior diver Julie Pavia (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) finished the 3-meter board in second with 473.55 points on the women’s side. The second place finish was the second for Pavia at the championships. Freshman Alex DeFazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) finished sixth in the 3-meter board with a score of 326.40.
The women’s 200-meter breaststroke was a powerful event for the Tartans as sophomore Alex Kinzler (Apollo, Pa./Plum) turned in an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 2:25.16 placing her second in the event. The sophomore class for Carnegie Mellon kept shining, as Lauren Connell (Hasbrouck Hts., N.J./Hasbrouck Hts.) placed fourth in the 100-meter freestyle (53.67).
For the men, senior Evan Powell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) finished his UAA career with a fifth place showing in the 100-meter freestyle (46.71). His time also gave him an NCAA ‘B’ cut.
For the second straight day both teams came away with a third place finish in a relay event. Saturday’s event was the 400-meter freestyle relay. The men's team comprised of Krzeminski, Powell, senior Brian Hunter (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon), and sophomore Michael Bailey (Quinton, Va./New Kent) finished in 3:06.42 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a 'B' cut. The women finished in 3:38.67 and was comprised of Connell, senior Emily Tong (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), senior Allie Theus (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), and junior Jenny Sieger (Newton Square, Pa./Radnor).
