Women Hold Top Spot at Longnecker Invitational, Men Second

Dec. 2 - (GROVE CITY, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon's women's swimming and diving team holds the top spot of the Longnecker Invitational hosted by Grove City College, while the men sit in second place after the first day. The women have totaled 272 points and a 77.5 point lead, while the men are 10.5 points behind host Grove City with 258 points.

Senior diver Julie Pavia (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Anna Kochalko (Encinitas, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) both took home a first place finish for the day. Pavia totaled 226.50 points on the 3-meter board for her top spot, while Kochalko touched the wall in 5:25.40 to take top honors in the 500-yard freestyle.

Junior Jenny Sieger (Newtown Square, N.J./Radnor) earned second place in the 50-yard freestyle after touching in 24.77 seconds.

Also earning a top three finish for the Tartan women was the 400-yard Medley Relay team. Sophomore Emily Tong (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), Kochalko, senior Allison Theus (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and junior Lucy Fortin (Rosemont, Pa./Harriton) combined to finish in a time of 4:12.68.

Theus and Tong also pulled in a 4th and 5th place finish in the 200-yard IM to help Carnegie Mellon to their top spot.

Despite not having any top finishers, the Carnegie Mellon men's team finished second in four events, including two relays, and third in two events.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior David Krzeminski (Grandville, Mich.), sophomore Michael Bailey (Quinton, Va./New Kent), freshman Brad Henderson (Solon, Ohio) and senior Evan Powell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took second place with a time of 1:25.93. Senior Brian Hunter (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) joined Powell, Krzeminski and Bailey to finish second in the 400-yard Medley Relay after touching the wall in 3:31.58.

Sophomore Andy Douglass (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), freshman Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) and sophomore David Mohney (Sedona, Ariz./Sedona Red Rock) helped the Tartans keep pace with Grove City taking second through fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle. Douglass touched the wall in 4:55.12 with McConnell right on his heels just .02 behind.

Hunter was the first Division III finisher in the 200-yard IM and finished second with a time of 1:57.70. Powell then finished third in the 50-freestyle, touching the wall in 21.47 seconds. Krzeminski also heped the Tartans earn points by finishing fourth behind Powell in the 50 free.
