Tartan Swimming Sweep in Dual Meet

Nov. 12 - (GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Tartan’s men’s and women’s swimming teams each won their respective swim contests against Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. The men totaled 124 points to the Wolverines 108, while the women totaled 126 to Grove City’s 100.

The men were led by senior Brian Hunter (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) who took two first places in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.17) and the 200-yard IM (1:58.97). Sophomore Andrew Douglass (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) also picked up two first place finishes, both in the distance events. Douglass led a Carnegie Mellon sweep of both the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.55) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:10.56). Finishing behind Douglass in the 500 free was freshman Jon Spring (McLean, Va.) (4:57.18) and freshman Tom McConnell (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) (4:58.10). McConnell picked up a second place finish in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:15.02.

Also picking up first place finishes for the Tartan men was Ron Papa (Malabon City, Philippines/Cranbrook Kingswood) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.56), junior David Krzeminski (Grandville, Mich.) in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.31) and senior Evan Powell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in the 50-yard freestyle (21.60).

Senior diver Julie Pavia (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) picked up two first place finishes in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events totaling 226.8 points and 216.35 points, respectively. Freshman Alex DeFazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) finished behind Pavia in both events.

Sophomore Anna Kochalko (Encinitas, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) earned two first place finishes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. She finished ahead of Grove City’s Ellen Keefer by two seconds in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.19. She then led the Tartans in a sweep of the 500 free with a finishing time of 5:22.92. Following Kochalko in the 500 free was freshman Yael Klionsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) in a time of 5:30.59 and freshman Becky Martz (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) in a time of 5:35.07.

Klionsky won the 1,000-yard freestyle by touching the wall in 11:30.03 and led the sweep of the event for Carnegie Mellon. Following Klionsky to the wall was sophomore Xiao-Lan Wong (Edison, N.J./John P Stevens) and freshman Tina Daup (Eagan, Minn.).

Sophomore Lauren Connell (Hasbrouck Hts., N.J./Hasbrouck Hts.) won the 50-yard freestyle sprint in a time of 25.38, while junior Jenny Sieger (Newton Square, Pa./Radnor) followed her in a time of 25.47. Sophomore Emily Tong (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) was the final Tartan to finish first, as she finished the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:19.18.

The Tartan swim teams will be in action again December 2-3 at the James Longnecker Invitational at Grove City.
