Carnegie Mellon Swim Teams Split in First Meet of Season

Oct. 28 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams of Carnegie Mellon hosted Division II Clarion University in a morning meet, the first of the season for the Tartans, Saturday, October 28. The men’s team topped the Golden Eagles 171-122, while the women fell 218-81.
The men totaled 12 first place finishes including the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Senior Evan Powell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), senior Brian Hunter (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon), junior David Krzeminski (Grandville, Mich.), and sophomore Michael Bailey (Quinton, Va./New Kent) took first in the medley relay with a finishing time of 1:37.64, as Bailey and Powell teamed up with freshman Brad Henderson (Solon, Ohio) and sophomore Patrick Snyder (Marlton, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep) to finish the freestyle relay in a time of 1:28.18.
Hunter and Krzeminski led the men with three first place finishes. Hunter took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. Krzeminski, the men’s top butterflyer, finished the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:57.15 and the 100-yard butterfly in 51.65 seconds. Krzeminski also took first in the in 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.80. Powell finished with two first place finishes. Powell finished the 100-yard backstroke in 53.61 seconds and the 50-yard freestyle in 21.96 seconds.
Bailey earned points for the Tartans with a first and second place finish. He took first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.73 and finished just .3 seconds behind Krzeminski in the 100-yard freestyle.
Freshman Ron Papa (Malabon City, Philippines/Cranbrook Kingswood) started his Tartan career with a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.04), beating out sophomore Damian McIntryre (Bethel Park, Pa.) by 2.03 seconds. Papa also earned two third place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (55.76) and the 200-yard IM (2:03.18). Henderson did well in his sprint event finishing third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.99) and then took second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.11).
In the distance events for the men, sophomore Andy Douglass (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and freshman Jon Spring (McLean, Va.) took second and third, respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle. Douglass finished the event in 10:11.12, while Spring touched in at 10:21.29. Both finished in the same order in the 500-yard freestyle, this time just seconds apart, as Douglass touched in 4:56.25 and Spring in 4:57.81.
The women took second place in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The medley relay team consisted of sophomore Emily Tong (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), sophomore Anna Kochalko (Encinitas, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS), senior Allie Theus (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), and junior Jenny Sieger (Newtown Square, N.J./Radnor). Sieger was also the anchor in the freestyle relay, teamed up with sophomore Amy Pischke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), junior Rebecca Obley (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and freshman Colleen Murphy (Aberdeen, N.J./Red Bank Catholic).
