Men’s Soccer Falls 3-2 at #10 Washington (Mo.) University

Sept. 29 – (St. Louis, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University undefeated men’s soccer team traveled to St. Louis, Mo. Saturday, September 29 to take on the 10th ranked Washington University Bears in the University Athletics Association (UAA) opener for both schools.  Carnegie Mellon’s gave Washington U. a run, but two late goals for the Bears gave them the edge prevailing 3-2.  The Tartans drop their first game of the season moving to 6-1, 0-1 UAA, as the Bears improve to 7-2, 1-0.

After 65 minutes of scoreless action, Carnegie Mellon took a 1-0 lead off the foot of junior midfielder Dan Brackley (Hamilton, N.J./Steinart) from 20 yards out.  It took the Bears little time to answer, as Nick Wilbar found the back of the net six minutes later to tie the score at 1-1.  Washington was not finished answering the Tartans.  The Bears’ sophomore Nat Zenner put Washington U. on top 2-1, 1:46 later.

Zenner added a late goal for the Bears to take a 3-1 advantage in the 77th minute.  Carnegie Mellon fought to the end pulling within one with 3:07 to play, as sophomore midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored on a penalty kick, but that is all the closer the Tartans got falling 3-2.   

Washington U.  out shot the Tartans 16-14. Junior goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) recorded five saves and the Bears sophomore keeper, John Smelcer, had five.

The Tartans men’s soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, October 6 when they host the University of Chicago. The game is scheduled to start at 11:00 am at Gesling Stadium.
