Jonathan Hall (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.) saved the day for the Tartans, heading home the game-winning goal during double overtime to defeat the La Roche College Redhawks 2-1 on Tuesday, October 9 in Gesling Stadium. The win keeps the Tartans undefeated in their non-conference schedule, and moves them to 7-1-1 overall. La Roche falls to 8-6-1.
Hall gave Carnegie Mellon the early lead in the 13th minute when he headed home a corner kick from freshman midfielder Max Betzig (Whitmore Lake, Mich./Greenhills).
The Tartans took the 1-0 lead into halftime but La Roche responded 79 seconds into the second half with the equalizer. Redhawks sophomore Alaa Khdaier’s shot from 25 yards out got past Tartan junior goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lake, N.J./Delbarton).
The score remained deadlocked at one through the remainder of the second half and the first overtime. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) set up the game-winning goal when his cross from the right corner of the field sailed into the middle of the box. A sprinting Hall entered the box and redirected the cross into the right side of the goal to end the game.
The Tartans mustered 14 shots to La Roche’s 11. Bazin made four saves while Redhawk senior goalkeeper Camillo DiLorenzo turned away three shots.
