Carnegie Mellon Can't Get by Case Western

Oct. 14 – (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – A first half lead by Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team didn't hold as the Tartans fell on the road, 3-1 to Case Western Reserve University. The Tartans are now 7-3-1 and 0-3-1 in the University Athletic Association while Case Western moves to 10-3 and 2-2 on the year.
Sophomore forward Patrick Lutz (Lebanon, Pa./Lancaster) scored the go-ahead goal for the Tartans in the 17th minute of action. Freshman midfielder Adam Bogus (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) assisted with a corner kick on the play.
Case Western's R.J. French converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute which tied the game. The Spartans scored what proved to be the game winner in the 32nd second minute when Kevin Bigart scored on an unassisted play.
Carnegie Mellon had chances to equalize in the second half as they pressured the Spartan defense and goal keeper Chad Skidmore. Unfortunately, Skidmore made seven of his eight saves for the game during the final 45 minutes, including two successive shots by sophomore forward Ricky Griffin (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) in the 62nd and 63rd minutes.
Case's third goal came in the 59th minute by Justin Steggerda.
Junior keeper Matt Bazin (Mountain Lake, N.J./Delbarton) made seven saves for the game.
Carnegie Mellon continues their season with a game on the road versus St. Vincent on Friday, October 19 at 4:00 p.m.
