Men’s Soccer Battles to Scoreless Tie in Final Home Game

Oct. .28 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s soccer team wrapped up their home schedule by dueling to a scoreless draw with the Brandeis University Judges on Sunday, October 28. The draw moves the Tartans to 9-4-2 overall and 0-4-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Brandeis moves to 8-8-3 overall and 0-5-1 in the UAA.
A scoring chance in the 52nd minute was thwarted thanks to a great save by Brandeis sophomore goalie Taylor Bracken. Carnegie Mellon sophomore forward Keith Haselhoff (McKeesport, Pa.) blasted a shot from 15 yards out only to have Bracken turn the shot away.
Junior goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) made a couple gorgeous saves to preserve the scoreless game. Bazin reacted quickly to stop a header from freshman midfielder Kyle Gross off a corner kick in the 71st minute and then used his reflexes to block a shot from freshman midfielder Stephen Kostel in the 74th minute.
The Tartans nearly took the lead at the end of regulation as junior midfielder Dan Brackley (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) headed the ball into the net only to have the goal called off due to being offsides.
Each team had a scoring opportunity in the two ten minute overtimes with neither materializing into a goal. Brandeis took 11 shots in the game while Carnegie Mellon attempted ten. Bazin made five saves as goalie and Bracken stopped four shots.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, November 3 when they travel to Atlanta to play the Emory University Eagles. The game is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
