Men’s Soccer Edges Washington (Mo.) University
Stats
Oct. 8 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Senior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) did what he does best on Sunday, October 8, scoring the game-winning goal as the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team won their fourth straight game. The Tartans defeated visiting Washington (Mo.) University 1-0 on the turf of Gesling Stadium in a crucial University Athletic Association (UAA) match-up. The Tartans up their record to 9-2 overall, and 2-0 in UAA action. The Bears fall to 6-3-1 and 0-2 in the UAA.
In the 55th minute, standing in front of the back (left) post, Browne one timed a shot into the net off a header from freshman midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). The play started on sophomore midfielder Dan Brackley’s (Hamilton, N.J./Steinart) throw-in from the right sideline. Brackley’s throw found the younger Browne’s head in the right side of the 18-yard box, with his header finding the older Browne.
Jonathan Browne almost netted a second goal when he received a cross from senior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) in the 85th minute. He wasn’t able to solidly connect on his one-timer, resulting in his shot going wide.
Each team finished with six shots in the low-scoring affair. Tartan sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) and Bears goalkeeper John Smelcer each collected one save over the 90 minutes.
The Tartans men’s soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 13 when they travel to Brandeis University to take on the Judges in a UAA match. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.
