Carnegie Mellon Men’s Soccer Upends W&J 5-0

Stats

Sept. 6 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – After a slow start, the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team caught fire late in the first half. The Tartans scored three goals in an eight minute span en route to a 5-0 victory against the visiting Washington & Jefferson Presidents at Gesling Stadium on Wednesday, September 6. The Tartans improve to 2-0 on the season while W&J falls to 1-2.

Senior forward Will Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) proved to be the spark the Tartans needed, as he received a pass in the 34th minute and found a wide open senior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) on the left side of the box who then blasted a shot past the charging W&J goalkeeper Tyler Hodgins into the far right corner of the net.

Schlough got himself into the scoring column in the 40th minute when he found some open space and crushed a shot from 25 yards out into the left corner of the net. Less than 30 seconds later the Tartans scored again, this time by freshman midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). Browne’s second goal of the young season came on a shot from 18 yards out that deflected off a W&J defender into the left side of the net.

Carnegie Mellon added two more goals in the second half, both in the 58th minute. Freshman Patrick Lutz (Lebanon, Pa./Lancaster) found a seam in the Presidents defense and laced a shot from the top right area of the penalty box into the far corner of the net.

Park tallied his second goal on the night when he delivered one for the highlight reel. On a crossing pass from senior Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Park made a diving header that found its way into the goal. “It was a great ball from Sean (Filipovitz), and luckily I could hit it solid,” Park commented.

The Tartans dominated the shot department, out shooting the Presidents 17-3 on the night. Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) recorded two saves on the evening and Hodgins for W&J stopped four shots.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to play the Westminster Titans. The start is slated for noon on Saturday, September 9.
