Stats
Oct. 29 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – In a game showcasing a couple major momentum swings, the University of Rochester edged the Carnegie Mellon Tartans 2-1 in University Athletic Association (UAA) men’s soccer action on Sunday, October 29 at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans fall to 10-5 on the season and 3-3 in the UAA while Rochester moves to 8-4-3 (2-2-2) on the season.
Rochester gained the momentum early when they scored in the fourth minute to go up 1-0. Yellowjacket forward Neil Osuch passed back to midfielder Brian Tuohy who took a shot from 20 yards out that found its way between Tartan sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) and the right post.
Neither team scored again before halftime as the Tartans went into the locker room down 1-0. Carnegie Mellon kept battling against the physical Yellowjackets and their determination paid off in the 70th minute when senior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored the equalizer. Browne received a long pass from freshman defender Jonathan Hall (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) along the left side of the penalty box and left-footed the ball just past the charging Rochester goalkeeper Paco Corbalan into the net.
The momentum didn’t stay with the Tartans for long however, as Rochester netted the game-winner in the 81st minute off of a corner kick by Patrick Ripp. Ripp’s kick went into the front of the box and forward Tyler Green collected the ball and booted the ball into the net for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Despite a furious offensive charge following Green’s goal, the Tartans were not able to put the ball into the net. The Tartans held a slight 12-11 edge in the shot department with Bazin making six saves and Corbalan stopping four shots. Rochester committed 19 fouls in the game compared to Carnegie Mellon registering ten.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, November 5 when they conclude their regular season against UAA opponent Emory University. The game, their final home game, will start at 2:30 pm.
