Men’s Soccer Defeats Point Park; Browne Breaks School Record

Oct. 5 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – In their final non-conference game of the season, the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Point Park Pioneers by a score of 1-0 on a cool Thursday, October 5. The Tartans improve their record to 8-2 overall. The Tartans’ final six regular season games will be against University Athletic Association opponents. With the loss, Point Park falls to 2-6-1.
Senior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) got the Tartans in the scoring column in the 23rd minute when he received a pass from senior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and shot it past the diving Pioneers goalkeeper Steve Fabian. Filipovitz’s cross came from the left end line directly to Browne, who one-timed the pass to the right of the keeper.
Jonathan Browne’s goal in the first half moves him into first place atop the Carnegie Mellon all-time points scored list. He now has 103 points in his career (48 goals and seven assists) surpassing Harry Ulrich’s previous record of 102 points set from 1995-1998.
Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) missed an opportunity for an insurance goal with three minutes to play when his shot hit the right post.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) only recorded one save on paper but his solid play kept the Pioneers off the board. The Tartans finished with 22 shots while the Pioneers mustered only six.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action this weekend when they host University Athletic Association foe Washington (Mo.) University in what is scheduled for a 1:30 pm kickoff. Their game is directly following the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team’s game against Washington (Mo.) University.
