Stats

Sept. 26 - (MARIETTA, Ohio) – In a crucial game before heading into University Athletic Association (UAA) play, the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team snapped their two game slide by defeating the host Marietta Pioneers 4–1 on Tuesday, September 26. The Tartans improve to 6–2 heading into their UAA opener at Chicago on Saturday while Marietta wraps up their non-conference schedule at 2–6.

The Tartans needed some second half success in order to notch their first victory in ten days. After each team scored a goal in the first half, freshman midfielder Ricky Griffin (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) scored what proved to be the game winner in the 59th minute when he unleashed a shot from inside the 18 yard box that found its way between Marietta goalkeeper Brian Bugge and the right post. Carnegie Mellon was able to add two late goals by freshman midfielder Patrick Lutz (Lebanon, Pa./Lancaster) and Griffin respectively to put the game out of reach. Lutz scored in the 79th minute off a cross from freshman midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and Griffin netted his second goal of the game in similar fashion off a cross from freshman midfielder Jonathan Simon (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) in the 84th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Daniel Brackley (Hamilton, N.J./Steinart) scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute when he took a pass from senior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) and took a shot that deflected off a Marietta defender and into the left side of the net. The Tartan lead did not stand very long however, as the Pioneers answered four minutes later thanks to Kyle Muth’s team-leading fifth goal of the season. Muth’s shot found an opening in the upper left corner of the net out of the reach of Tartan sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton).

The Tartans out shot the Pioneers 12–3 with Bazin collecting one save in the win.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will open UAA play on Saturday at the University of Chicago in what is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. game. The Tartans lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Maroons last year at home with the only goal coming in the 79th minute. The two teams finished tied for second place in last year’s association standings.
