Men's Soccer Rallies for 3-1 Victory; Now 5-0

Stats

Sept. 16 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team raised their unblemished record to 5-0 thanks to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over the visiting Juniata Eagles at Gesling Stadium on Saturday, September 16. The Eagles fall to 3-3 with the loss.

The Tartans gave up their first goal of the season in the 38th minute when Eagle midfielder Rio Tomlin fired a shot on goal that was deflected away by Tartan sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton). The rebound came right back to Tomlin’s possession and he laced the ball into the net from the right side of the box.

The Tartans kept their poise despite trailing at halftime and their patience paid off in the 55th minute when sophomore midfielder Daniel Brackley (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) one-timed a cross off a corner kick from senior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) into the back of the net for the equalizer and the first goal of his career. Filipovitz scored the go-ahead goal five minutes later off a pass from freshman forward Patrick Lutz (Lebanon, Pa./Lancaster) when he made the most of an open shot from the left side. He booted the ball into the right corner of the goal from 15 yards out. Filipovitz commented, "Pat (Lutz) beat half their defense and I just tried to help him out and finish it for him."

Senior forward Will Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) rounded out the scoring for the Tartans in the 81st minute when he rocketed a shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net. Lutz collected his second assist of the night on the goal that Juniata goalkeeper Mark Guthridge had no chance of stopping.

The Tartans out-shot Juniata 16-5 on the night, Bazin collected three saves, and Guthridge racked up four saves in the loss.

The Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team will start a four game road trip when they travel to play Penn State Altoona on Tuesday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m.
