Men’s Soccer Records Fourth Straight Shutout with 2-0 Win

Sept. 12 - (GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team traveled to take on the Grove City Wolverines on Tuesday, September 12 and in muddy conditions, the Tartans came away victorious by the score of 2-0. With the win the Tartans up their record to a perfect 4-0, while the Wolverines drop to 3-2.

After a scoreless first half, in which the Tartans out-shot Grove City 8-4, Carnegie Mellon struck gold in the 53rd minute when freshman midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) placed a direct free kick from 20 yards out into the net. The Tartans added an insurance goal in the 64th minute when freshman midfielder Ricky Griffin (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) took a pass from senior forward Will Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and on the ensuing breakaway Griffin blasted the ball past Grove City goalkeeper Michael Manahan inside the near post.

Carnegie Mellon’s sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton), this week’s University Athletic Association (UAA) goalkeeper of the week, tallied his 14th career shutout thanks to his seven save performance against the Wolverines. Manahan had seven saves of his own in the loss.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 16 when they host Juniata College in what is scheduled to be an 8:00 p.m. kickoff. Their game will directly follow the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team’s game, also versus Juniata College.
