Men’s Soccer Grounds Geneva in 2006 Opener

Sept. 2 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team made their 2006 season debut a successful one as they defeated the Geneva Golden Tornadoes 3-0 on Saturday, September 2. The newly resurfaced Gesling Stadium was the site for the Tartans’ first win of the 2006 campaign.
Senior forward Will Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) started the scoring for the Tartans when he took a cross from fellow senior forward Andrew Park(Boise, Idaho) and one-timed it into the right corner of the net in the 25th minute. Freshman Ryan Browne(Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) added to the scoring in the 31st minute when he stole the ball in the Geneva end of the field, spun, and laced the ball into the left side of the net from 18 yards away.
Freshman Jonathan Simon (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made it 3-0 in the 50th minute when he collected a pass from Schlough in the box and flicked it past the charging Geneva goalie Sam McCracken into the left side of the goal from ten yards out. Simon’s goal rounded out the scoring for the Tartans en route to their three goal victory.
Sophomore goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) recorded one save in the win while McCracken collected seven saves for Geneva. The Tartans out-shot the Golden Tornadoes 20-4 on the night.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will be in action again on September 6, when they host the Washington & Jefferson Presidents at Gesling Stadium at 7:30 pm.
