Men’s Soccer Clips Wings of Eagles 2-0
Stats
Nov. 5 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a 2-0 victory on senior day over the Emory University Eagles at Gesling Stadium on Sunday, November 5. The Tartans improve to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Eagles drop to 11-6 overall and 2-5 in the UAA.
Both teams battled to a scoreless first half in which each team took three shots. The Tartans had a great opportunity when senior midfielder Sean Filipovitz's (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) corner kick was headed by senior midfielder Will Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) toward the top right corner of the net. Emory goalkeeper Keith Meehan rose to the challenge however, and knocked the shot away.
In the second half, the Tartans' persistence paid off when Schlough smashed a shot from outside the 18-yard box to the upper corner of the net in the 60th minute. Freshman forward Patrick Lutz (Lebanon, Pa./Lancaster) assisted on the goal, Schlough's fifth on the year.
Senior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), Carnegie Mellon's career goal-scoring leader, netted his seventh goal of the season in the 72nd minute when he one-timed a pass from Lutz past Meehan to give the Tartans an insurance goal.
Each team took 11 shots in the game, with Meehan making five saves and Tartan sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) stopping eight in one of his best performances of the season.
The Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team will wait to hear their postseason fate, which will be announced Monday morning. They will either earn a bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament or the ECAC Tournament.
