Stats
Oct. 27 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The visiting Case Western Reserve men’s soccer team broke open a scoreless game with two lightning quick goals early in the second half to defeat the Carnegie Mellon Tartans by a score of 2-0 on Friday, October 27. The loss drops the Tartans to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the University Athletic Association. Case improves to 14-2-1 overall and 3-2 in the UAA with the win.
With a steady rain coming down and a game-time temperature of 43 degrees, neither team was able to generate many scoring chances in the scoreless first half of play. The score didn’t stay deadlocked at zero in the second half for very long, as Case Western stunned the Tartan faithful with a pair of goals within a minute of each other.
In the 58th minute, Case forward Kevin Bigart booted a long pass downfield where midfielder Justin Steggerda got ahead of the defense, ran onto the ball, and smashed it from 15 yards out right past the charging Carnegie Mellon sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton). Less than a minute later, Bigart connected on an insurance goal off a corner kick by forward RJ French. French’s kick reached Bigart, alone near the back post, and Bigart one-timed the cross into the net.
Carnegie Mellon out shot the Spartans 15-10 on the evening, but were not able to get any shots past Case goalkeeper Konrad Karasek. Karasek made five saves on the night while Bazin stopped two shots.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will play again on Sunday, October 29 when they host UAA opponent University of Rochester at 1:30 pm.
