Stats

Oct. 22 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team wrapped up their home schedule with a 3-0 victory over the Westminster College Titans Saturday night at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans improve to 11-1-1 while the Titans drop to 8-9.

Junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) got the Tartans on the board in the 12th minute off a free kick by senior midfielder Dan Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.). Mastalski’s long free kick was headed by Schlough over Titan keeper Anthony Beilstein and into the net. Schlough’s fifth goal of the season put the Tartans up 1-0.

Junior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) added two goals of his own to give the Tartans some insurance. His first goal came in the 26th minute when he received a clear attempt by the Titan defense after a save by Beilstein. Filipovitz proceeded to blast the ball inside the lower left post of the net from the top of the box.

Filipovitz's second goal of the game came in the 70th minute when he took a cross from junior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) and laced the ball into the empty net from the middle of the box. These goals were Filipovitz’s second and third of the season.

Senior defender Stephen Berei (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley) helped preserve the shutout in the 22nd minute when he came out of nowhere to clear a ball destined for the goal. The shot had gotten by freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) but Berei was able to sweep in and clear the ball moments before it crossed the goal line.

Carnegie Mellon out shot the Titans 20-3 with Bazin recording one save in his ninth shutout of the season. Beilstein recorded eight saves in the loss.

The Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team will be in action again next Friday, October 28th when they travel to Cleveland to play University Athletic Association member, Case Western Reserve University. The game is scheduled to commence at 4:30 p.m.
