Oct. 8 - (ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - Carnegie Mellon's men's soccer team added a University Athletic Association (UAA) win to their record with a 1-0 overtime victory against host Washington University in St. Louis Saturday night. The Tartans move to 7-1-1 on the year and are now even in conference play with a 1-1 record. Washington falls to 5-4-3 on the year and 0-2 in association play.
Junior midfielder Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) scored the game-winner for the Tartans with 1:50 to play in the first overtime. Park's goal came on a breakaway as he beat the Bears keeper to the far post. Senior Matt Wilkinson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Pingry) had the other shot on goal in overtime with a header off a corner kick by senior defender Daniel Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.).
The Tartans had seven shots on goal for the game, while the Bears put two on frame. Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) recorded his sixth shutout of the year, while making two saves.
Carnegie Mellon opened the game on the attack with Mastalski taking a corner kick just 1:53 into the game and junior Ryan Cullen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) put the first Tartan shot on frame in the sixth minute.
The Bears had two shots in under a minute 35 minutes into the game but one was blocked and one went wide. The Tartans countered with two shots of their own as the Bears keeper, Matt Fenn, saved both.
Bazin made his second and final save of the game with 15 seconds to play, which preserved the eventual victory for the Tartans.
