Sept. 28 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – In a tough well-played game, neither the host Carnegie Mellon Tartans or the Penn State Altoona Lions could put one in the net. The Tartans are now 5-0-1 on the season, and the Lions move to 6-3-1.
Penn State Altoona threatened to score with 14:08 remaining in the second half when Dan Saxton fired a hard low shot from twenty yards out, but Tartan freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) was there to smother the shot.
Carnegie Mellon’s best chance in regulation came off a corner with 3:28 left in the second half, when junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) came down with the ball in the middle of the box and fired a shot in traffic only to have Lion goalie Tim Wassell deflect it away.
The Tartans had two opportunities fall short in overtime when junior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) one-timed a shot wide off a cross by junior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho), and senior defender Dan Mastalski’s (Beaver, Pa.) free kick was saved by the Lions goalie.
The Tartans edged the Lions in shots 17-10 for the game and had nine corner kicks to Altoona’s one. Each goalie recorded six saves on the night.
