Men’s Soccer Overpowers Point Park

Oct. 5 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Point Park Pioneers Wednesday night, October 5, by a score of 5-0. The Tartans up their record to 6-1-1 and the Pioneers drop to 4-6.

Junior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) got the Tartans on the board in the 14th minute when he received a pass from sophomore midfielder Christopher Watts (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) inside the penalty box and blasted the ball just inside the far post for his 2nd goal of the season.

Senior midfielder Dan Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.) scored the second goal of the match in the 19th minute when he received a loose ball thirty yards out and smashed the ball into the right corner of the net for his first goal on the year.

In the 24th minute junior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) netted his seventh goal of the season off a free kick by junior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). The free kick got by Point Park goalie Jake Hess and Browne punched the ball into the empty net.

The Tartans increased their lead in the second half on goals by junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and freshman midfielder Eric Herman (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha’s Vineyard Reg.). Schlough scored his second goal of the season in the 57th minute when he got open at the top of the box and boomed the ball by Hess. Herman netted his first career goal in the 75th minute when he took a pass from freshman Kurt Duschl (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) in the right side of the box and fired it into the top left corner to finish off the scoring.

Carnegie Mellon out shot Point Park 29-3 as Tartans junior goalie Robert Vargo (West Mifflin, Pa.) recorded three saves to notch his first win of the season. Hess made eight saves for the Pioneers.

The Tartans will travel to St. Louis to play Washington University on Saturday, October 8 in what is scheduled to be a 7:00 p.m. start.
