Stats

Oct. 16 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team netted two quick goals en route to a 2-1 victory over the visiting New York University Violets at Gesling Stadium in UAA conference play Sunday, October 16. The Tartans improve to 9-1-1 (3-1) on the season, while the Violets drop to 8-5-1 (0-4).

The Tartans got on the board less than five minutes into the game when junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) scored his third goal of the season. Schlough headed a corner kick from senior midfielder Dan Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.) into the left corner of the goal to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead.

Junior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) gave the Tartans a two goal cushion in the 11th minute when he got by the Violets’ defense and shot the ball past NYU goalie Chris Wright. Schlough assisted on the play, as his header was controlled by Park right before he laced the ball by Wright into the left side of the net. This was Park’s fourth goal on the season.

New York got on the board in the 78th minute when Max Sachar’s long shot was batted away by Tartan freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) and Zyad Qamer was in position to head the rebound into the left corner of the net.

The Tartans were out shot by the Violets 8-6 on the day, but thanks to the stellar play of Bazin they held on for the victory. Bazin made six saves on the day including some with less than ten minutes left in the game when NYU was attempting to tie the score.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action Wednesday, October 19th when they host Grove City College at Gesling Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
