Tartans Men’s Soccer Receives 6th Straight NCAA Bid

Nov. 7 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – For the sixth consecutive year the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will participate in the NCAA postseason with the chance to advance to the national final held in Greensboro, N.C. on November 26. The Tartans finished the regular season with a 1-0 road win at #13 Emory University in double overtime to finish tied for second in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

The Tartans, 13-2-1 on the season, will travel to John Carroll (Ohio) University to play Fredonia State (15-3-3) in the first round of NCAA competition on Saturday, November 12 at 1:30 p.m. Fredonia State finished second in the SUNYAC to Brockport State, who won by a 4-2 decision in penalty kicks after the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Carnegie Mellon is led offensively by junior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), who has nine goals on the season and is the current all-time leader in scoring for the Tartans with 43 career goals. Junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) has five goals and five assists on the year, while juniors Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) follow with four goals apiece.

Freshman keeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) has been tough to beat all year, as he has 10 shutouts in his 12 victories. Bazin has given up just five goals on the year and has a .907 save percentage.

For the Blue Devils, Matt Mahaffey has beaten the keeper eight times on the year, including four game-winning goals. Matt Borchard has 14 shutouts on the year and has given up just eight goals all season with only one multi-goal against game.

Washington & Jefferson College (15-5-0) and John Carroll (12-6-1) play in the other side of the four-team bracket. The Tartans defeated the Presidents of W & J in their third game of the season, 1-0. Carnegie Mellon put 13 shots on goal against the Presidents, including Browne’s game-winner in the 70th minute.
