Men’s Soccer Wins; Browne Breaks Record

Stats

Sept. 24 - (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – Junior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) propelled the Carnegie Mellon Tartans to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Mount Union Purple Raiders Saturday afternoon in a very physical game. Thirty-one fouls were called with five yellow cards being issued. The Tartans up their record to 5-0 while the Purple Raiders fall to 5-3.

Browne scored the first two goals of the game, the first tying the Carnegie Mellon career goal total of 39, and the second putting him past Eddie Park, who played for Carnegie Mellon from 1986-1989. In the fourth minute Browne found the net when he took a pass from senior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) and blasted the ball with his left foot into the left corner of the goal, past the charging Mount Union goalie Mike Corum.

The Tartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime and extended their lead in the 61st minute when Browne connected again. Browne and Corum got tangled up right in front of the goal and from the ground Browne was able to tap the ball into the empty net. Browne has a team-high six goals on the season.

Sophomore forward Scott Kuppe (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) one-timed a cross from the right corner by William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) in the 89th minute to complete the scoring on the day. Kuppe’s second goal of the season found a crease between Corum and the right post.

The Tartans out shot the Purple Raiders 24-9 and freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) made three saves and collected his fourth shutout on the season. Corum made ten saves for Mount Union.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action Wednesday, September 28 when they host Penn State – Altoona in what is scheduled to be a 7:30 p.m. start.
