Stats
Sept. 7 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The host Carnegie Mellon Tartans men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Marietta Pioneers by a 2-0 score Wednesday night in their home opener. The win improves the Tartans to 2-0-0 on the season with Marietta falling to 1-2-0.
Carnegie Mellon got on the board 7:47 into the first half when junior William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) kicked in a rebound off senior Daniel Mastalski's (Beaver, Pa.) corner kick. Carnegie Mellon struck again at the 24:13 mark off a throw-in when junior Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson)used his head to re-deflect a header by Schlough into the goal. That goal put Carnegie Mellon up 2-0 and it would stay that way the rest of the game.
Carnegie Mellon out shot the Pioneers 24-5, with freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) recording his second straight shutout. The Tartan defense consisting of senior Matt Wilkinson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Pingry), sophomore Christopher Watts (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler), and senior Stephen Berei (Hopewell, N.J.)thwarted all the Marietta attacks at the Carnegie Mellon end of the field to help preserve the shutout.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action on Wednesday, September 14 when they travel to play Washington & Jefferson College at 5:00 p.m.
