Stats
Sept. 17 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team beat the visiting Juniata College Eagles 4-0 on a cool Saturday evening under the lights at Gesling Stadium. The win ups the Tartans’ record to 4-0-0 while the Eagles dropped to 1-5-0.
The Tartans had an opportunity in the 36th minute when Juniata committed a hand ball in their penalty box. The ensuing penalty kick by senior midfielder Daniel Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.) was stopped by Eagles goalie Tim Penrod. Penrod went on to make ten saves on the night.
Carnegie Mellon got in the scoring column 39:46 into the first half when junior midfielder Sean Filipovitz’s (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) cross was headed in by junior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho). Filipovitz’s speed and ball-handling created opportunities all night for the Tartans.
With a 1-0 lead coming out of halftime the Tartans continued their attacking style in the second half and it paid off in the 66th minute when junior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored not once, but twice. Browne’s first goal came at 65:24 when he shot low from the left side of the box and tucked the ball just inside the far post. Thirty-five seconds later Browne found the net again when he volleyed a pass from Park over Penrod, who had come off his goalie line on the play. Browne now has a team-high four goals on the season and needs one goal to tie the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer career goal scoring record of 39 set by Eddie Park, 1986-89.
In the 77th minute, sophomore midfielder Matt Humphrey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) wrapped up the scoring when he headed a Mastalski free kick from fifty yards away into the net. Humphrey’s goal is the first career goal for the sophomore.
Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) and junior goalkeeper Robert Vargo (West Mifflin, Pa.) combined for the Tartans’ fourth shutout of the season. Carnegie Mellon out shot Juniata 30-4 on the evening.
Carnegie Mellon is in action again next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Mount Union College. The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team is also playing Mount Union College Saturday with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
