Men’s Soccer Defeats Grove City 2-0

Oct. 19 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Junior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) wasted no time Wednesday night giving the Carnegie Mellon Tartans the lead. His goal twenty-five seconds into the game helped the Tartans on their way to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Grove City Wolverines. The Tartans up their record to 10-1-1 and the Wolverines fall to 8-4-3.
Filipovitz brought the ball up the right side of the field shortly after kick off and blasted a shot from thirty yards out that found its way just inside the far post for his first goal of the season.
Junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) extended Carnegie Mellon’s lead with five minutes left in the first half. After Grove City committed a foul near their penalty box, senior midfielder Dan Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.) crossed the free kick from the left corner. His cross was headed by Schlough into the right corner of the net past Wolverine goalkeeper Michael Manahan. This was Schlough’s fourth goal on the season.
The Tartans out shot the Wolverines 23-5 with freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) recording three saves. Grove City’s Manahan made four saves in the loss.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, October 22nd when they host Westminster College at Gesling Stadium in what is the Tartans' last home game of the season. The game is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m.
