Tartans Finish UAA Play with 1-0 Victory
Stats
Nov. 5 - (ATLANTA, Ga.) – In the final regular season game for both the Carnegie Mellon Tartans and the Emory Eagles, the Tartans junior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored the game-winner 1:53 into the second overtime period. The Tartans are now 13-2-1, 5-2 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play and the Eagles drop to 15-3-0, 4-3 in UAA play.
Although it was a scoreless first half, both the Tartans and the Eagles had opportunities to put a number on the board. Browne had the best chance to put the Tartans ahead in the 18th minute when he sent what looked like a curving cross from the left side to the high far post. Eagle senior keeper Rohit Agarwal leapt and punched away the attempt. Browne had another attempt go wide six minutes later.
The Eagles switched on the offense with back-to-back shots against Tartan freshman keeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) in the 25th minute. Both times, Bazin dove to his right to stop the Eagles scoring chances. Bazin continued his stellar first half play as he cut the angle and made a save against Eagle midfielder Patrick Carver, with 11:42 to go in the half.
The home squad continued to put pressure on the Tartan defense throughout the second half with six shots on goal. Bazin twice came up with big saves against shots inside the box with 5:35 and 20 seconds to play.
The first overtime saw no shots by either team, but the Tartans used a throw-in deep in Eagle territory to break the scoreless tie. Freshman midfielder Daniel Brackley (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) threw a ball inside the 18-yard box where junior midfielder William Schlough (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) was there to flick the ball to the far post. Browne was awaiting the pass and came through with a header which Agarwal could not control. The goal was Browne’s ninth on the season.
Bazin finished the game with eight saves, while Agarwal totaled two saves in the loss.
The game concludes the regular season for both the Eagles and the Tartans, as both wait to hear word about postseason play. NCAA bids will be given out late Sunday evening. Check the Tartans web site for information on Monday, November 7.
