Late Goal Dooms Men’s Soccer

Stats

Oct. 2 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Ryan Ehle was in the right place at the right time for the visiting University of Chicago Maroons Sunday at Gesling Stadium. Ehle headed a crossing pass from Brian Kolva in the 79th minute that found a niche between Tartan freshman goalie Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) and the crossbar. That proved to be all the scoring in the game as the Maroons prevailed 1-0. Carnegie Mellon falls to 5-1-1 (0-1) on the season and the Maroons improve to 7-2 (1-0). This was the conference opener for both teams.

The Tartans nearly took the lead in the 11th minute when junior forward Andrew Park (Boise, Idaho) chased down a long pass outside the penalty box and blasted a shot which charging Maroon goalkeeper Keith Crum was able to deflect away.

Chicago’s lead was almost short-lived however, when the Tartans threatened to score in the 80th minute off a corner by senior midfielder Daniel Mastalski (Beaver, Pa.). Mastalski’s corner was knocked back to the top of the box to Park who hammered the ball toward the left post where junior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) met the ball and fired it on goal. The ball hit the top crossbar, the goal line, and then the crossbar again before Crum was able to grab it.

Carnegie Mellon out shot Chicago 11-4, with Crum recording five saves and Bazin one.

Carnegie Mellon will next be in action Wednesday, October 5 when they host Point Park College at 7:30 p.m.
