Golf Finishes Second at UAA Championships

Apr. 15 – (ORLANDO, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team competed at the final day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, Tuesday, April 15 held at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Orlando, Fla. After shooting a team score of 313 on Monday, the Tartans recorded the lowest team score (302) during the second round to finish in second place with a two round total of 615.  The second place finish for the Tartans is their highest since the formation of the UAA in 1988.

Emory University won the UAA team championship with a two round total of 591 and freshman Ryan Williams from the University of Rochester won the UAA Individual Champion tallying a 146 (72-74).

Junior Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) rebounded from his round of 81 Sunday to card an even par 72 round Tuesday placing ninth overall (153).  The Tartans two day leader was sophomore Chris Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) who finished tied for fifth place with a 148 (74-74).

Senior Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and junior Joshua Chen (Woodridge, Conn./Amity) tied for eleventh place shooting a 157, as Smith carded a 79 and Chen a 77 Tuesday.  Sophomore Brett Cannaday (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) rounded out the field for the Tartans scoring a 168 (81-87).  

Four golfers for the Tartans were named to the All-UAA Team.  Lee claimed first team honors, as Timmons, Smith and Chen found a spot on the second team.  Lee becomes the seventh Tartan to be named to the first team in the twenty-one year history of the UAA.
