Tartans Finish Second at Grenelefe Webber International Tournament
Mar. 15 – (HAINES CITY, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University golf team spent the week in Florida training for the upcoming spring season and competed in the Grenelefe Webber International Tournament on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15 at Grenelefe Golf & Tennis Resort in Haines City, Fla. The Tartans finished second with a team score of 636 after a windy second round.
The Tartans started the second day with a share for the lead with the host team and a 318 score. Junior Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), senior Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and junior Josh Chen (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) each shot a 79 on day one. Freshman Brent Driscoll (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) and sophomore Brett Cannaday (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) followed with scores of 81 and 85, respectively.
Chen and Howard stepped it out on Saturday with scores of 76 and 77, respectively, as they were both named to the All-Tournament team. Timmons finished Saturday with a score of 81, while Cannaday carded an 84 and Driscoll added an 88.
There were three individuals who competed in the tournament as senior Denver Faulk (Latrobe, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) shot an 81 and 83, sophomore Nick Burkholder (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy) shot an 86 and 87 and senior Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) shot a 93 and finished Saturday with an 87.
The Tartans return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they travel to Howard, Ohio to compete in the Kenyon College Invitational.
