Golf Team had Three Named All-America Scholars
May 13 – (NORMAN, Okla.) – Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team had three members named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for Division III by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Senior
Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and juniors
Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and
Joshua Chen (Woodridge, Conn./Amity) were all honored.
This marks the second straight year Smith was named a scholar athlete. He finished the 2008 campaign with an average round of 78.1 tied with Chen for the second lowest on the team. Both Smith and Chen fired their lowest round of the year (71) at the Edward Jones Shootout. Timmons for the second year in a row recorded the Tartans lowest average recording a 76.8 score through sixteen rounds. He fired his lowest round of the season (69) at the Lamkin Intercollegiate in the fall. His low round 69 was the start of shooting three straight rounds under par.
All three were named to the All-University Athletic Association second team, as it was the second time that Timmons and Smith found a spot on the squad. Combined, the three tallied 18 of the Tartans 25 top ten finishes.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 79.0 in Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
