Carnegie Mellon Golfer Timmons Wins UAA Individual Championship;
Tartans Place Third as a Team

Apr. 23 - (ORLANDO, Fla.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team competed at the final day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, Monday, April 23 held at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Orlando, Fla. After shooting a team score of 298 on Sunday, their best ever championship round, the Tartans recorded a team score of 311 on day two finishing the championships in third place with a two round total of 609.

After carding his collegiate career best round (70) during the opening round, sophomore Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was crowned the UAA Individual Champion. Timmons fired a 73 on day two as he ended with a two day total of a one under par 143 to win the Championship.

After carding a four over par 76 in the opening round, Tartan junior Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) finished Monday’s round shooting even par (72) to place him in a tie for fifth place with a 148. His even par 72 marks his lowest round since transferring to Carnegie Mellon last season. Sophomore Joshua Chen (Woodridge, Conn./Amity) tallied a two round total of 157 placing fourteenth after carding an 82 on Monday.

Rounding out the Tartans scoring were freshman Christopher Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) (84) and junior Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) (89) with a two day total of 161 and 173, respectively.

Timmons and Smith were named to the All-UAA First Team. This marks the first time that Carnegie Mellon has had two golfers named to the first team in the championship. They also become the fifth and sixth Tartans to be named to the first team in the twenty year history of the UAA.

Emory University won the UAA team championship with a two round total of 591. New York University claimed second place after firing a 602.
