Golf Finishes Fifth at the Mid-Atlantic Regional

Apr. 9 - (HERSHEY, Pa.) - At the final day of the Mid-Atlantic Regional, the Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team turned in the second best team score to make up for their sloppy play Sunday, shooting a 309 during Monday’s round. Their two-day combined score was 641 finishing in fifth place.

Franklin & Marshall College shot a low score of 304 on the second day to rally for the team title. The Diplomats finished with a two-day total of 624 and finished four strokes ahead of Allegheny College (318-310-628), last year’s champion. Day one leader Wesley was third (315-316-631) with St. John Fisher fourth (322-312-634).

The Tartans individually were led by, this week’s University Athletic Association (UAA) Golfer of the Week, sophomore Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) who fired a 78 on Monday ending with a two-round total of 160. The Cardinal and Gray had two golfers, junior Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and freshman Christopher Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) shoot a two-day total of 161. Smith turned in Carnegie Mellon’s lowest round of the tournament as he carded a 75 on Monday. Sophomore Joshua Chen (Woodridge, Conn./Amity) fired a 78 Monday finishing with a score of 162 for the two-day affair, while freshman Brett Cannaday (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) completed the Tartans scoring with a 176 (83-93).
