Golf Places 5th at the 2006 Griffin Motors Invitational

Sept. 25 - (MEADVILLE, Pa.) The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team competed in the final day of the 2006 Griffin Motors Invitational Monday, September 25. The invitational was hosted at The Country Club of Meadville by Allegheny College. The Tartans turned in a fifth place showing with a team score of 614 after improving six strokes after day one shooting a 304.

The Gators of Allegheny College held their 12 stroke lead after day one to win the invitational with a 586. Division II, Indiana University of PA fired a 299 day two to lace second (601) followed by St. Vincent with a 608. Allegheny’s Blue Team fired a 300 day two placing fourth (612) followed by the Tartans and Westminster College (649).

After carding an 80 day one Junior Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) fired a one over 73 to lead the Tartans on Monday. Darby finished the two day event in tenth place (153). For the two days junior Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) carded a 152 placing eighth to lead the Carnegie Mellon overall. Sophomore Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) shot a three over 77 Monday finishing third on the team with a 155. Sophomore Joshua Chen (Woodridge, Conn./Amity) and freshman Christopher Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) turned in a two day total of 157.

The Tartans will hit the links October 1-2, as the compete at the West Penn Championship held at the Alcoma Country Club in Penn Hills, Pa.
