Golf Fires 309 in Opening Round of UAA Championships

Apr. 24 - (POMONA, N.Y.) At the first day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, the Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team finds themselves in fourth place after shooting a 309 Monday, April 24. Their two day event is being held at the Minisceongo Golf Club in Pomona, N.Y.

Emory University, ranked seventh nationally, leads the field after firing a team high 300 during the opening round. Host New York University and the University of Rochester both shot a 303 finishing in second after day one. Behind them is the Tartans (309) and then Brandeis University (327).

Senior Matt Simone (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) carded his best round of the year firing a four under 68 to lead the field of 25 by four strokes. Sophomore Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) is currently tied for 12th after round one with a 78. Sophomore Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) carded an 81, while freshman Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) shot an 82. Senior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) complete the Tartans scoring with an 83.

The second and final round of the UAA Championship will be held, Tuesday, April 25 with the first group schedule to tee-off at 8:00 a.m.
