Golf Opens Spring Play with First Place Showing

Mar. 16 - (ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team opened up their 2006 spring season finishing in 1st place in a three team invite at the St. Petersburg Country Club, Thursday, March 17. The Tartans fired a team-score of 309 followed by Eckerd College (318) and Shenandoah University (337).

Pacing Carnegie Mellon was senior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic), as he turned in the top score of the afternoon firing a 74. Finishing three strokes off Straub was freshman Joshua Chen (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) (77). Freshman Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) carded a 78, while sophomores Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) rounded off the Tartans scoring shooting an 80 and 85, respectively.
