Golf Places Third at Westminster Invitational

Mar. 27 - (NEW CASTLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team competed at the annual Titan Invitational, hosted by Westminster College at the par-72 New Castle Country Club in New Castle, Pa. Monday, March 27. The Tartans placed third with a team score of 306.

The Gators of Allegheny College claimed first place Allegheny, as the fired a team high 306, Malone College finished second (314) followed by Carnegie Mellon. Rounding out the top five was Saint Vincent College (327) and Grove City (328).

The Tartans were led by freshman Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who tied for second individually firing a 76. Senior Matt Simone (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) each shot a 78 finishing in a seventh place tie. Sophomore Blake Darby’s (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) 83 tied him for twenty fourth best and senior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) rounded out the Tartans team scoring carding an 87. Freshman Joshua Chen (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) entered the invitational as an independent golfer and carded an 85.
