Golf Finishes Fifth at Regionals

Apr. 10 - (HERSHEY, Pa.) At the final day of the Mid-Atlantic Regional, the Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team turned in the second best team score to make up for their sloppy play Sunday, shooting a 307 during Monday’s round. Their two day combined score was 638 finishing in fifth place just one stroke behind a tie for second.

Allegheny fired a team-score of 318 and 301 in the two day event to take home first place. Washington & Jefferson, the University of Rochester (N.Y.) and St. John Fisher all finished the Regional Invitational in a second place tie with a two day total of 637.

The Tartans individually had two golfers, sophomore Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and freshman Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), shoot a two day total of 161. Darby turned in Carnegie Mellon’s second lowest round as he carded a 75 in the second round. Senior Matt Simone (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) improved 16 strokes during the second round, firing a team best 73 finishing with a score of 162 for the two day affair. Sophomore Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and senior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) complete the Tartans scoring with a 163 (83-80) and 167 (80-87) respectively.
