Carnegie Mellon Golf Places First at McDaniel Invitational

Apr. 2 - (GETTYSBURG, Pa.) The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team competed at the 11 team McDaniel College Invitational at The Links at Gettysburg, Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2. The Tartans recorded a school record team score of 295 the second day of competition to finish in first place with a two day total of 599.

Carnegie Mellon headed into the club house after day one with a five stroke lead behind senior Matt Simone’s (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) par round of 72. Senior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and sophomore Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) finished three strokes behind Simone carding a 76. Sophomore Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) shot an 80 and freshman Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) rounded out the Tartans scoring with an 83 after day one.

Simone started the second round as the individual leader and would become the top medalist after shooting a 73 on Sunday. Simone recorded a two-round total of 145 on the par 72, 6,700-yard course. Straub finished the invitational four strokes off the leader firing a 73 in day two to end in third place with a 149. After a shaky Saturday, Timmons improved 11 strokes to shoot even par (72) for the Tartans on Sunday completing the two day event carding a 155 and placing in a tie for 12th overall. Darby would be the Tartans final golfer to score on Sunday as he turned in a round of five over par 77 placing with 19th with a two-round total of 157. Carnegie Mellon’s Smith would conclude the Invitational in 21st place after shooting an 82 in the final round.

The Tartans return to action Thursday, April 6 when they host a five team Invitational at Long Vue Country Club.
