Tartans Golf in First Place after Opening Round of Edward Jones

Day 1 Results

Apr. 15 -(APOLLO, Pa.) After the first day of the Edward Jones Shootout hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, the Tartans golf team find themselves leading with a team score of 298. The annual event is being held Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16 at The Links @ Spring Church in Apollo, Pa.

In second place behind the Tartans is University Athletic Association rival, the University of Rochester, turning in a first round team score of 304. Washington & Jefferson, the second ranked team in the region, holds the third spot after firing a 312.

After the first round there is a four way tie atop of the individual leader board with two Carnegie Mellon golfers finding their way in the mix. Sophomore Howard Smith (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and freshman Alex Timmons (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) both shot a two over par, 74, to match Stephen Goodridge of the University of Rochester and Marc Fillari of Washington & Jefferson for a share of the lead. Smith was four over par after the front nine before registering a two under on the back nine to complete the afternoon shooting two over and a share of the lead.

Senior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and freshman Joshua Chen (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) each carded a 75 for the Tartans, while sophomore Blake Darby (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) finished the round with a 79. Carnegie Mellon entered a three individual golfers into the tournament, as senior Randahl Matsuno (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) and junior Aanand Radia (Dracut, Mass./Gov Dummer Academy) shot 79 and sophomore Denver Faulk (Ligonier, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) completed the rest of the field carding an 81.
