Rich Erdelyi enters his 23rd year on Carnegie Mellon's staff and 19th year as head golf coach. He was named the 1998 and 2006 UAA Golf Coach of the Year. Coach Erdelyi also teaches the physical education golf classes in the Athletic Department.

"The golf team is made up of a group of hard-working, dedicated golfers," Erdelyi said. Carnegie Mellon competes in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, which features Brandeis, Case Western Reserve, Emory, New York and Rochester.

The Tartans have placed third in UAA play 11 of the last 13 years. "The students go out, play their best and have a good time doing it, which is what Division III golf is all about," Erdelyi said.

Prior to joining the Carnegie Mellon staff, Erdelyi was an administrative assistant and football scout for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League during the 1983 and 1984 seasons. A native of Highland Park, N.J., Erdelyi earned seven varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball at Highland Park High School. Erdelyi was also an All-County and All-Central New Jersey selection as a senior center and linebacker.

Erdelyi is a recipient of Highland Park's Dr. Robert Weiss Memorial Trophy for devotion to athletics. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1970 from the University of Pittsburgh.
